 Dear FGCS Families - Although it's only October, the cold and flu season is already in full swing. We have been notified of one confirmed student case of H1N1(swine) flu and several cases of H1N1 among family members of students. Many other students are out sick with a variety of cold and flu symptoms.
We are continuing efforts at school to minimize contagion by enforcing good hygiene practices, regularly sanitizing classrooms and immediately calling parents when their students are sick at school. Teachers and other staff are also expected to stay home when they are sick. Please help us prevent the spread of flu and other illnesses by following these practices:
-Remind your children to wash their hands often with soap and water.
-Teach your children to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues. If they don't have a tissue, they should cough or sneeze into their sleeve or elbow, not their hands. Remind them not to touch their noses, mouths or eyes because germs easily spread this way.
-Know the signs and symptoms of the flu, which include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
-Keep children at home when they are sick. Any children who are sick at school will be sent home and will be expected to remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are symptom-free. This is for the protection of the sick child as well as others in the school community. We know that most parents work outside the home, so please make plans for someone to pick up and care for your children if you are not able to do so yourself.
The Forest Grove School District is sponsoring a free H1N1 vaccination clinic from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 at Tom McCall East Upper Elementary School, 1341 Pacific Avenue. The clinic is open to anyone in an identified 'priority group' for the vaccine; priority groups include children and young adults ages 6 months to 24 years; pregnant women; health care workers; emergency first responders; daregivers of children less than 6 months of age; and adults ages 25‐64 with underlying chronic medical conditions (diabetes, asthma, etc.).
Several other clinics are tentatively scheduled at other District schools depending upon vaccine availability. Check the District web site at www.fgsd.k12.or.us for the latest information.
