Click to view this email in a browser

Forest Grove Community School is partnering with 4-H to offer after-school classes and clubs for students - we need your help to make it happen.

If you'd like to lead, help with or participate in an after-school class or club, please join us at 6:30 p.m. Weds., Nov. 4 for a planning session at FGCS. This meeting is a chance for parents and students to talk about the kinds of classes or clubs they'd like and to hear about how 4-H programs work at other schools.

We hope to see you at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4. If you'd like more information before then or can't attend but want to get involved, please contact Donna VanDyke at 503-359-4600 or d.vandyke@fgcschool.org.

Flu Update

Click to view this email in a browser

Dear FGCS Families -

Although it's only October, the cold and flu season is already in full swing. We have been notified of one confirmed student case of H1N1(swine) flu and several cases of H1N1 among family members of students. Many other students are out sick with a variety of cold and flu symptoms.

We are continuing efforts at school to minimize contagion by enforcing good hygiene practices, regularly sanitizing classrooms and immediately calling parents when their students are sick at school. Teachers and other staff are also expected to stay home when they are sick. Please help us prevent the spread of flu and other illnesses by following these practices:

-Remind your children to wash their hands often with soap and water.
-Teach your children to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues.  If they don't have a tissue, they should cough or sneeze into their sleeve or elbow, not their hands. Remind them not to touch their noses, mouths or eyes because germs easily spread this way.
-Know the signs and symptoms of the flu, which include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
-Keep children at home when they are sick. Any children who are sick at school will be sent home and will be expected to remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are symptom-free. This is for the protection of the sick child as well as others in the school community. We know that most parents work outside the home, so please make plans for someone to pick up and care for your children if you are not able to do so yourself.

The Forest Grove School District is sponsoring a free H1N1 vaccination clinic from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 at Tom McCall East Upper Elementary School, 1341 Pacific Avenue. The clinic is open to anyone in an identified 'priority group' for the vaccine; priority groups include children and young adults ages 6 months to 24 years; pregnant women; health care workers; emergency first responders; daregivers of children less than 6 months of age; and adults ages 25‐64 with underlying chronic medical conditions (diabetes, asthma, etc.).

Several other clinics are tentatively scheduled at other District schools depending upon vaccine availability. Check the District web site at www.fgsd.k12.or.us for the latest information.

If you have any questions about FGCS practices regarding student illness, please contact Karen Torry at 503-359-4600 or k.torry@fgcschool.org.

School Safety Patrol - Volunteers Needed

Click to view this email in a browser

Dear FGCS Families -

As you are aware our school is located on a busy city street. To ensure the safety of our students, the FGCS Parent-Teacher Organization is establishing a volunteer Safety Support program. Each afternoon, volunteers will staff the South corner of Pacific Avenue and A Street and the parking lot behind the school. Safety Support volunteers will wear reflective safety vests, creating a visual presence for drivers as students traverse this busy intersection and parking area.

To be successful, this program needs you! We hope you'll get involved.
Two volunteers are needed each school day: Mon.-Thurs. 3:05 – 3:30 p.m. and Friday 1:05 – 1:20 p.m.
If you are able to donate a few minutes one day a week, please contact:
PTO Volunteer Coordinator Heather VanFleet at jv_sub@yahoo.com.

Some important information about pedestrian safety:

"Close to 1,000 child pedestrians ages 14 and under die each year as a result of being hit by motor vehicles on streets and in parking lots and driveways. Pedestrian injury is a leading cause of unintentional deaths in children ages 5 to 9.

Young children imitate the behavior of adults, so it's important to be a good role model. Resist the temptation to jaywalk, especially when carrying or walking with your child. Always take the extra minute to cross at the corner."

Here are fundamental rules to teach your kids:
-Walk on sidewalks or shoulders, not in the street.
-If there are no sidewalks and you've got to walk on the shoulder, walk as far off the road surface as possible, facing traffic.
-Cross at a crosswalk or corner, not mid-block, and especially not between parked cars.
-Look left, then right, then left again before crossing the street, and keep looking all ways until you reach the other side.
-Try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them so you're sure they see you.
-Obey traffic lights and "Walk/Don't Walk" signals, and stay within designated crosswalks.
-Keep a lookout for cars that are turning or backing up, especially around driveways and garages.

To prevent H1N1, seasonal flu and other illnesses, the county health department offers the following recommendations:

-Be sure you and your children get both the seasonal flu and the new H1N1 (swine flu) vaccines as they become available. This is the most important action to prevent flu infection.
-Teach your children to wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds each time. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself. Hands should always be washed before eating or drinking, after using the toilet, and before touching your eyes, face or nose.
-Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
-Teach your children to stay at least three feet away from people who are sick. This means at least three "giant steps" away.
-Teach your children not to share food, drink, or other personal items (such as lipstick) with others.
-Keep sick children at home. Do not send them to school. If they become sick at school, you will be called and asked to pick them up. Make sure your emergency phone numbers are up to date. Plan now for sick child care.
-People who are sick should stay home from work or school and stay away from other people until they are free of fever for 24 hours (without the use of fever reducing medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen) and are feeling better.
