Organized by Gretchen and Veronica, Level 2 teachers and marathon runners, all Level 1 and 2 students will be walking or running the trail at Lincoln Park. -SEEKING SUSTAINABLE GARDENS: In collaboration with the Self Directed Learning class led by Robin Lindsley and Steve O'Day, Level 4 biology teacher Rochell Auran would like to take her students on a tour of sustainable gardens in Forest Grove. She is looking for gardens that have chickens, bees, a victory garden, a butterfly garden, native plants, fruit trees or anything else that the residents have done to make their city lots more sustainable. If you have a sustainable garden (in progress is fine) that you would like to share and it is within walking distance of FGCS, please contact Rochelle at r.auran@fgcschool.org or leave a phone message for her at 503-359-4600. School Reopens Wednesday

Click to view this email in a browser

Forest Grove Community School, along with all District schools, will reopen tomorrow (Weds., May 6). The decision to reopen schools was made by District Superintendent Jack Musser after consultation with county health officials. The following announcement was posted on the District website:

"All schools in the Forest School School District, including Cornelius Elementary School, will reopen Wednesday. Buses will run on normal schedules. The schools have been closed Monday and Tuesday because of concern over the H1N1 (swine flu) virus. However, U.S. health officials announced today that the virus has proven milder than expected, and they no longer recommend that schools close because of swine flu. "We are very pleased and excited that our students are going to be back in school tomorrow," said Superintendent Jack Musser. "We firmly believe that, based on new information from the Centers For Disease Control and Washington County Health Department, it's safe to reopen tomorrow."

FGCS encourages all families to continue following guidelines recommended by the health department to prevent the spread of H1N1 and other illnesses:
--Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
--Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
--Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
--Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
--If you are sick, stay home for seven days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further. Flu symptoms include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, and possibly nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Health Resources

--The Forest Grove School-Based Health Center is open 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. weekdays. The center is located near Forest Grove High School and may be accessed by any student in the Forest Grove School District. Drop-ins are welcome but appointments encouraged by calling 503-359-4057.
-State of Oregon Flu Hotline: 1-800-978-3040
-Washington County Bilingual Flu Hotline: 503-846-2999
-Facts about H1N1 are available from the Centers for Disease Control at www.cdc.gov/swineflu or from the Oregon Department of Human Services at http://www.flu.oregon.gov/
