Strategic Planning Update

Dear FGCS Community:

We're writing to update you on the status of strategic planning, the process by which we are creating a plan to develop our school program over the next three to five years. The process has taken longer than we expected; we originally intended to have a plan finalized by the end of the school year. However, by taking more time, we feel that the plan will be robust and have the support required to continue to move our school forward.

As you'll recall, in the spring we asked parents to complete surveys about a wide variety of topics intended to help us assess how various aspects of our program and operations are working and to identify the areas where we should focus our planning efforts. We received 100 responses from parents, representing more than 50 percent of our families. We were pleased and grateful for the level of participation – your willingness to take the time to give us this feedback reminds us how fortunate we are to have such a committed group of parents involved with our school. We also surveyed teachers, staff and students to make sure we gathered information from everyone with a stake in the future of FGCS.

The strategic planning committee, appointed by the FGCS Board of Directors, has been working since March. Members of the group are board chair Jon Stagnitti; principal Vanessa Gray; board members Susan Winterbourne, Anita Zijdemans-Boudreau and Sonia Olivo; parent Melanie Stagnitti; director of school operations Karen Torry; and Charlie Graham, Level 2 teacher. The committee set goals intended to address top priorities identified by the survey process and has formed six work groups to develop strategies and action items to achieve those goals. The work groups, led by committee members, include parents, teachers and staff members. The work groups and their chairs are:
#1 Developing the Ecoliteracy Program – Susan (s.winterbourne@fgcschool.org)
#2 Individual Learning – Vanessa (v.gray@fgcschool.org)
#3 Professional & Program Development – Anita (a.zijdemans@fgcschool.org)
#4 Promoting a Healthy and Engaged Community – Karen (k.torry@fgcschool.org)
#5 Community Partnerships - Vanessa
#6 Facilities – Jon (j.stagnitti@fgcschool.org)

Although some of the strategic planning goals will take time to achieve, one received immediate attention: Improving the play yard. As you heard earlier this summer in a message from Karen, we've built a new play deck, planted trees and ordered new play equipment, benches and picnic tables that were installed a few weeks ago. We will also set up basketball hoops behind the main building to expand the available play space. In the fall, we'll put in climbing vines and other plants to help create a more natural, sheltered environment in the play yard. We all look forward to seeing our students play in a more engaging and beautiful outdoor space. Thanks again to all of you who donated to our playground fund and helped make these improvements possible!

The next steps in strategic planning will be fine tuning the plan and soliciting comments from all concerned over the summer and early fall. Once the plan is completed, we will create committees to help achieve the identified strategies and action items. We would greatly appreciate your support as we work to finalize and implement the plan.

Thank you for the insightful information you provided; your input and support laid the foundation for the plan and will be invaluable in helping us successfully implement the plan's goals. If you have questions or would like to be involved, please contact any committee member. Have a safe and enjoyable summer – see you in September!

Sincerely,

Jon Stagnitti, Board Chair
Vanessa Gray, Principal
